The proposed hospital should have a tie up with advanced
eye care institute like L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad.
An expert from the higher centre may visit the secondary
centre once/twice a week to examine and treat the complicated
cases in secondary centres. Few cases, which require very
advanced care e.g. Eye implantation, squint etc may be shifted
to the higher centres. There should be scope for future
expansion and depending on the requirement the secondary
centre may develop its own expertise.
The
need for eye care services are more in rural and peripheral
areas where the existing institutions are not able to provide
eye care services and the community is dependent on camps.
The community is not satisfied with the quality of services
in the camps. Therefore, it is proposed that the Secondary
Hospital in Gulburga district should be supported by a number
of Vision Centres in the peripheral areas in district Gulburga,
Bidar, Raichur, Bijapur, Bagalkot and Bellary. To begin
with, there may be three vision centres in each district
(total 18 vision centers). In each vision center, there
may be one ophthalmic assistant and one health educator.
The number of vision centers and the staff in each center
may be expanded based on the utilization and demand of the
services.
The
success of the hospital depends on the educational activities
in the field areas, referral system, monitoring and supervision.
