One fourth of India's population is in
the age group of 10 - 14 years. This population has not
been given adequate attention in the past through public
delivered programs either education or women and child development
department or for that matter even health and family welfare
department. Hitherto all the national as well as state health
programs have bypassed this important population group.
Perhaps this could be the one of the reasons for unsatisfactory
level of reproductive and child health indicators in the
country.
Adolescents
are exposed to many risk behaviour events, malnutrition,
teenage pregnancy and problems related to sexual behaviour.
We have the expertise to take up adolescent education through
schools particularly to bring awareness of issues related
to physiological development, nutrition, family life, conception
and contraception, empowerment etc. We have developed a
model, which can be replicated in any part of the country
to bring the adolescent population into the main stream
of nation building.
